Compalapa

Located on the side of a deep ravine, San Juan Comalapa was founded by the Spanish and is composed mostly of indigenous Kaqchiquel people.

The Comalapa group we work with is currently composed of only 4-5 women, two of whom work on both the back-strap loom and have also learned to work on the footloom. This work is traditionally done by men. These women have learned from their husbands who also do some work with us.
